Before writing a program you have to have an idea of what you want the program to do. Once you have an idea of what you want your program to do you have to put it down a step by step guide to help you accomplish the goal of the program that is called an Algorithm.


An algorithm can be said process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. We encounter algorithms more often than we think in our day to day activities like when you open your door to brushing your teeth. When you want to brush your teeth you have an idea of the task you want to accomplish and the steps to brushing your teeth are the algorithm.

An algorithm can be expressed in different ways from word to diagrams. There are two way of expressing an algorithm that beginner friendly and are both polar opposites these are Psuedocodes and Flowcharts.

Flowchart

A flowchart is a diagrammatic representation of an algorithm. What that means is that a flowchart is a diagram that represents a. A consists of 5 major symbols.Which are:

Connector Symbol
Decision Symbol
Flow Lines
Input Symbol
Process Symbol
Start or End Symbol

The five symbols above are the most flowchart symbols. NOTE: There are no standards on the symbols that can be used in a flowchart. A flowchart can contain symbols apart from the ones above. The symbols listed above are the most used and generally accepted beginners’ symbols.

A Start Symbol must be used to start a flowchart with the text start in the diagram. A flowchart is only expected to have one start symbol. After the start symbol, you can now include the other symbols and a flow line from the start symbols linking it to the next symbol.

Psuedocode

The word pseudo means false. As the name implies, pseudocode is not an actual code. It is a method of algorithm writign which uses certain standards set of words which makes it resemble a code. How ever, pseudocode cannot be compiled or execuded as a code.

Similar to the flowchart, each pseudocode must start with the word BEGIN or START, and end with the word STOP or END. the statement between start and end are English phrases and indented to make the word start and end stand out. to display some value, the word DISPLAY, WRITE, or PRINT is used. if the value to be displayed is a constant value, it is enclosed within quotes. similarly, to accept value from users, the word input or read is used.

NOTE: There are no standard in pseudocodes and flowcharts.
